The blend label tells you what is in the fuel, not what your engine approves
Biodiesel is commonly blended with petroleum diesel and labeled by the approximate biodiesel percentage. B5 is a low-level blend containing up to 5% biodiesel, while B20 contains up to 20%. That label is separate from cetane rating, sulfur content, and other fuel specifications shown at a diesel pump.
U.S. diesel compatibility is broad at lower blend levels, but B20 approval still needs a vehicle-specific check. The Alternative Fuels Data Center states that all diesel OEMs approve B5 and many approve B20. Individual owner manuals can add model-year, engine, seasonal, service-interval, storage, or regional instructions, so the pump label should start the decision rather than finish it.
If you drive a used diesel, do not rely on the current manufacturer's general marketing page alone. Engine options and fuel approvals can change across generations. Match the manual or technical guidance to the VIN, engine family, and model year you actually own.
Check these items before choosing the higher biodiesel blend
- The exact model year, engine, and fuel specification in the owner's manual
- Any B20 or biodiesel wording on the fuel door, fuel cap, or under-hood labels
- Manufacturer warranty language for biodiesel blends
- Required fuel-quality standard or approved supplier guidance
- Cold-weather or extended-storage restrictions that apply to higher blends
- Maintenance-interval changes listed for the vehicle's operating conditions
- Whether the pump is actually labeled B20, B5, renewable diesel, or another product rather than assuming all alternative diesel fuels are interchangeable
B5 and B20 answer different questions at the pump
AFDC reports broad OEM approval for B5. You still need to meet the vehicle's other diesel-fuel specifications and quality requirements.
Many diesel OEMs support B20, but approval is not a reason to ignore model-year instructions, cold-weather notes, storage guidance, or maintenance requirements.
Do not experiment with a stronger biodiesel blend just because the vehicle ran normally on a lower one. Fuel-system materials, calibration, emissions equipment, service intervals, and climate can matter.

Do not treat a fuel-compatibility question as an additive problem
If you filled with a blend that may exceed the vehicle's approved limit, do not pour in a random additive to try to change the blend. Check the owner's manual and manufacturer guidance before further driving or refueling. If the engine runs poorly, a warning appears, or the wrong fuel type may have been added, stop and get vehicle-specific assistance.
