A normal rainy-day charge should still pass these basic checks
Rain by itself is not the same as damaged or improperly installed electrical equipment.
- The EVSE is approved for the location where it is installed and is being used according to its instructions
- The charging equipment is certified by a recognized testing laboratory and the installation meets applicable electrical requirements
- The cable jacket, connector, and vehicle inlet are not cracked, crushed, burned, or contaminated
- The connector can be inserted fully and latch as designed
- There is no standing or flood water around damaged electrical equipment or an open connection
- Any portable charging equipment is connected exactly as the automaker and EVSE maker allow, without an improvised extension-cord setup
Rain, snow, and flooding are three different charging conditions
Use the equipment normally and keep the connector stored as instructed when not in use. Do not add makeshift plastic wraps that interfere with latching, cooling, or drainage.
Prevent ice from blocking the inlet or connector. Do not chip aggressively at electrical contacts or force a frozen connector into place.
Flooding is not ordinary weather exposure. Do not handle submerged or visibly damaged electrical equipment or assume a tripped breaker is the only issue.
If charging stops during a storm, troubleshoot without creating a second hazard
- 01Read the vehicle and EVSE messages first
A charging interruption can come from the station, utility power, temperature, connector lock, or vehicle. Record the message before unplugging repeatedly.
- 02Inspect only what you can see safely
Look for obvious damage, debris, an incompletely seated connector, or water conditions that are beyond normal rain. Do not open electrical panels or disassemble the EVSE.
- 03Try the documented reset procedure
Follow the EVSE and vehicle instructions rather than cycling breakers or adapters at random. If the fault returns, stop using that equipment until it is checked.
Stop and get help
Do not normalize heat, melting, damaged receptacles, or improvised extension cords
Weather-rated charging equipment is engineered as a system. A loose household receptacle, overheated plug, damaged cable, unapproved adapter, or extension cord creates a different risk than rain on intact EVSE. Stop charging if you see heat damage, arcing, melting, exposed conductors, or other electrical damage and have the equipment evaluated by a qualified professional.
