The timing of the vibration is your first useful clue

Snow and slush can collect unevenly inside a wheel. Once that material freezes, the extra weight may act like a temporary wheel imbalance. The faster the wheel turns, the more noticeable the vibration can become through the steering wheel, seat, or floor.

The pattern matters. A car that drove smoothly before a storm, then begins shaking after plowing through deep slush, has a different story from a car that has been vibrating for weeks. The winter buildup may explain the new symptom, but it should not be used to dismiss a damaged tire, bent wheel, missing wheel weight, pothole impact, or suspension problem.

Do not test the theory by repeatedly accelerating to the speed where the shake is strongest. Reduce speed, find a safe place to inspect the vehicle, and use the condition of the wheels and tires to decide the next step.

Look for a winter-related cause without putting yourself under the car

  • Compare all four tires for an obviously low tire, sidewall damage, or a new TPMS warning.
  • Look through the wheel openings for thick, uneven snow or ice stuck to the inner wheel barrel.
  • Check the wheel wells for packed snow that could rub a tire during turns.
  • Notice whether the vibration began immediately after deep snow, a slushy parking lot, or an automatic wash in freezing weather.
  • Look for a bent rim edge, missing wheel cover, or obvious impact damage from a curb or pothole.
  • Record whether the shake is felt mostly in the steering wheel, mostly in the seat, or only while braking.

    Use a level parking space where you can walk around the vehicle safely. Do not stop on a highway shoulder just to scrape the inside of a wheel unless an immediate tire problem forces you to stop there.

    A garage, covered parking area above freezing, or a warmer part of the day can release packed snow without prying against painted wheels, brake hoses, balance weights, or plastic liners.

    Remove only loose material you can reach safely

    Do not reach behind the wheel while the vehicle is running, and do not use metal tools that can damage a wheel finish or nearby components. If the buildup is inaccessible, let it thaw or use a professional wash setup that is safe in the current temperature.

    Recheck tire pressure before the next normal drive

    Cold weather can lower pressure at the same time snow is building up. Use the vehicle's door-jamb pressure specification with cold tires instead of judging pressure by appearance alone.

    Resume at low speed and reassess

    If the wheels are clear and the vibration is gone, continue to monitor the car. If it remains, avoid treating the winter buildup as a confirmed diagnosis and arrange tire or chassis inspection.

Stop and get help

A severe vibration is not something to drive through until the ice falls off

Stop normal driving and arrange roadside or tire service if the steering feels unstable, a tire is rapidly losing pressure, a sidewall is bulged or cut, a wheel is visibly damaged, there is scraping or grinding, or the vibration remains severe after snow and ice are gone. Winter weather and pothole impacts often happen on the same trip, so more than one problem can be present.
