A fast charger cannot force a cold battery to accept full power
DC fast charging is a negotiation between the station and the vehicle. Even if the dispenser is labeled for a very high output, the vehicle's battery-management system sets the power it will accept based on battery temperature, state of charge, cell conditions, and other limits.
Cold-weather preconditioning uses the vehicle's thermal system to move the battery toward a temperature range where it can charge more effectively. The process is model-specific: some EVs start it automatically when the built-in navigation is routing to a compatible fast charger, while others provide a manual setting or less direct driver control.
Slow charging can come from the battery, the charging curve, or the station
A cold battery may be limited even when the charger has more power available. The vehicle decides how much power it will accept.
Many EVs reduce charging power as the battery fills. Cold-weather limits can stack on top of the normal high-state-of-charge taper.
A station can be derated, power-shared, thermally limited, or otherwise unable to deliver its nameplate maximum. One slow session does not isolate the cause.
Prepare for a winter fast-charge stop before you arrive

Some vehicles precondition automatically when you navigate to a compatible DC fast charger, some offer a manual control, and some have little or no driver control. Use the owner information for your model.
- 02Give the thermal system time to work
Start the recommended navigation or preconditioning process before you are already at the charger. How long the battery needs depends on outside temperature, starting battery temperature, vehicle design, and the drive to the station.
- 03Arrive with a useful charging window
If trip planning allows, avoid reaching the charger nearly full. A warm battery at a lower state of charge is more likely to show the vehicle's stronger part of the charging curve.
- 04Compare the pattern across more than one station
If the charging rate remains unexpectedly low after the battery is warm and conditions are appropriate, compare a different known-good charger and record any warning messages before assuming the battery is failing.
Record these details before you report a winter charging problem
- Outside temperature and whether the vehicle had been parked cold-soaked
- Battery state of charge when the fast-charge session began
- Whether battery preconditioning was active and how long it ran
- Charger power rating and whether the site showed a reduced-power message
- Peak charging power and how the rate changed as state of charge increased
- Any vehicle charging, battery-temperature, reduced-power, or thermal-system warning

Do not use improvised heaters or defeat battery protections
The high-voltage battery thermal system is vehicle-controlled. Do not place portable heaters under the battery, alter temperature sensors, repeatedly disconnect charging equipment, or use unsupported software tricks to force a higher charging rate. Follow the automaker's preconditioning and charging instructions.
