The traction battery and the low-voltage system do different jobs
The large traction battery stores the energy used to move the vehicle, but it is not simply wired directly to every light, lock, computer, and switch. A separate low-voltage electrical system powers the electronics that wake the vehicle and control the contactors that connect the high-voltage pack when the vehicle is ready to drive.
That is why an EV can show 40%, 70%, or even more traction-battery charge in an app from an earlier check and still appear dead at the car. If the low-voltage side cannot wake the control modules, the high-voltage pack may remain electrically isolated even though it contains plenty of energy.
Use the symptom pattern to decide what to check first
A deeply discharged or failed low-voltage battery is one possible cause. Use the manufacturer’s no-power entry and recovery instructions because access points differ by EV.
Interlocks, charging-cable status, brake-pedal recognition, key authorization, high-voltage faults, or other conditions can also prevent drive engagement.
Repeated low-voltage failures can involve the battery itself, a DC-DC charging issue, a module that stays awake, wiring, software, or another electrical load.
Before you connect any external power source
- Confirm the exact EV year, model, and low-voltage battery type
- Read the owner’s manual section for no-power entry, jump starting, or low-voltage recovery
- Use only the designated low-voltage terminals or jump points
- Confirm voltage and polarity before connecting equipment
- Keep tools and cables away from orange high-voltage components
- Do not use the EV to jump-start another vehicle unless the manufacturer explicitly allows it
- Do not guess at hidden battery locations or remove high-voltage service covers
- Stop if you see crash damage, water intrusion, smoke, heat, arcing, or a high-voltage warning
Stop and get help
Do not work on the high-voltage system to solve a low-voltage no-start
Orange cables, traction-battery enclosures, high-voltage connectors, and service disconnects are not part of a normal roadside jump-start procedure. Do not open, probe, bypass, or disconnect high-voltage components. If the vehicle has crash damage, flooding, smoke, unusual heat, or a high-voltage isolation warning, move away as conditions allow and contact emergency or qualified EV service personnel.
After the EV powers up again, do not stop at 'it works now'
- 01Record the warnings
Photograph low-voltage, charging-system, or electrical messages before clearing anything. Note how long the vehicle had been parked and whether a software update, accessory, or recent service preceded the problem.
- 02Allow the vehicle to complete its normal recovery
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for keeping the vehicle awake, driving, or leaving it connected to charging equipment after low-voltage recovery.
- 03Arrange diagnosis if it repeats
A low-voltage battery that repeatedly falls flat can leave the EV stranded again. Have battery health, DC-DC charging, parasitic loads, software, and relevant fault codes checked rather than repeatedly jump-starting it.
