The week before your flight, look for problems that parking will expose

  • Slow cranking, repeated jump-starts, battery warnings, or a battery near the end of its expected service life
  • A tire that loses pressure between weekly checks or has a nail, sidewall damage, or visible bulge
  • A dashcam, OBD dongle, USB adapter, cooler, alarm accessory, tracker, or other device that remains powered with the car off
  • An EV or plug-in hybrid battery level that does not leave comfortable reserve for the expected temperature and return drive
  • An airport lot with no clear after-hours jump, tow, or customer-assistance plan
  • A key-fob battery that is already weak or an emergency mechanical-key procedure you have never tried

Set the car up so your return night is boring

    Resolve battery doubts before departure day

    If starting has been sluggish or the battery has recently needed a jump, have the 12-volt battery and charging system checked. A highway drive to the airport is not a reliable way to restore a failing battery.

    Set cold tire pressures and inspect for a slow leak

    Use the driver's-door placard rather than the tire sidewall maximum. Parking does not cause a healthy tire to suddenly fail, but two weeks can reveal a leak that was already present.

    Decide what should stay powered

    Unplug unnecessary accessories. If a dashcam uses parking mode, confirm its low-voltage cutoff and whether two weeks of monitoring fits the battery strategy you are comfortable with.

    Leave useful emergency gear accessible

    Do not bury the jump starter, jumper cables, flashlight, tire inflator, wheel-lock key, or roadside-assistance information under checked luggage that leaves with you.

    Save the parking and assistance details offline

    Photograph the row and space, save the lot phone number, and know the pickup procedure in case your phone has poor service or little battery after the flight.

Disconnecting the battery is usually not a casual airport-parking shortcut

It is tempting to disconnect a 12-volt battery to eliminate parasitic draw, but modern vehicles may need retained power for security systems, telematics, keyless entry, emissions monitors, memory functions, or other electronics. Some vehicles also have specific battery-disconnection procedures.

For an ordinary two-week trip, the better question is whether the battery is healthy and whether an accessory is draining it. If the vehicle will be stored much longer, follow the manufacturer's storage guidance. A battery maintainer can be useful in a private garage with an appropriate power source, but it is rarely an option in an airport lot.

If you own an EV, airport parking planning also includes traction-battery state of charge and temperature. Follow the EV manufacturer's long-term parking guidance instead of trying to maximize the pack to 100% just because the car will be left alone.

Battery temperature can still follow outdoor conditions, and a garage does not solve an existing parasitic draw or weak battery.

Plan for heat, snow, hail, tree debris, and the possibility that assistance is farther away from the terminal.

Check actual operating hours, jump-start policy, gate access, and how late-arriving flights are handled rather than assuming staff are always present.

On return, do a 30-second walk-around before joining highway traffic

Look for a visibly low tire, fluid under the vehicle, impact damage, broken glass, animal activity, and warning lights after startup. If the engine cranks slowly or the battery needs a jump, drive only if the vehicle is otherwise operating normally and arrange battery or charging-system testing soon rather than assuming the parking stay was the entire cause.
