Collect the numbers from your actual vehicle and trailer first

Trim level, engine, axle ratio, wheelbase, drivetrain, options, and installed equipment can change ratings. Start with labels and documentation tied to your specific setup.

  • Vehicle payload or cargo-carrying information on the door or door-jamb label.
  • Gross vehicle weight rating and axle ratings shown on the vehicle certification label.
  • The vehicle manufacturer's trailer-towing limits and any required equipment in the owner's manual or towing guide.
  • Receiver and ball-mount ratings stamped or labeled on the hitch components.
  • Trailer gross vehicle weight rating and tire/load information on the trailer label.
  • The expected loaded trailer weight, including water, batteries, propane, camping gear, tools, or cargo.
  • Passenger and cargo weight that will be carried in the tow vehicle.

The biggest tow-rating number is not the only limit

A truck advertised with a high maximum tow rating may not have that capacity in every configuration. Real payload can become the tighter limit after passengers, bed cargo, accessories, and trailer tongue weight are added to the tow vehicle.

The safe setup is governed by the lowest applicable limit in the chain: vehicle, axle, tires, hitch, ball mount, coupler, trailer, and any other rated component. Do not upgrade one hitch part and assume the vehicle rating increased with it.

Tongue weight also matters because too little or too much can affect stability and axle loading. Use the trailer and tow-vehicle manufacturer's guidance for your specific trailer type rather than relying on one universal percentage for every setup.

Do a physical hookup check before every departure

    Inspect the coupler, ball, receiver, and locking hardware

    Confirm that the ball size matches the coupler, the latch is fully engaged, and pins or locking devices are installed as intended.

    Attach safety chains and the breakaway cable correctly

    Follow the trailer and hitch instructions for routing and attachment. Keep chains clear of the road while preserving enough movement for turns.

    Connect lights and verify every function

    Test running lights, brake lights, turn signals, and hazard lights with another person watching the trailer. Do not assume a plugged-in connector means every circuit works.

    Check vehicle and trailer tires separately

    Use the pressure and load information specified for each vehicle and trailer tire application. Look for cracking, bulges, uneven wear, and age-related deterioration before a long highway trip.

    Confirm mirrors, brake controller, and trailer brakes when applicable

    Make sure you can see around the trailer and that any required or installed braking system is adjusted and operating according to its instructions before entering traffic.

Do not tow while guessing at a rating

If the trailer feels unstable, a tire is overloaded or damaged, the hitch hardware does not match, the brakes or lights do not work, or you cannot verify an important load limit, stop and correct the setup before highway driving. Towing mistakes can affect braking distance, steering, tire temperature, and vehicle stability very quickly.
