Required and recommended do not mean the same thing

The exact wording on the fuel door and in the owner's manual matters more than the badge on the trunk or what another owner uses.

Premium required
Engines the manufacturer specifies for a minimum higher octane

Use at least the stated octane rating. A lower grade can increase knock risk or force the engine-management system to reduce performance, and it may not meet the manufacturer's operating requirement.

Premium recommended
Vehicles that permit a lower grade but prefer premium for best performance

Regular may be allowed, but the manual may describe reduced performance, different towing guidance, or other limits under high load or hot conditions.

Regular specified
Engines designed to operate on regular unleaded

Buying a higher octane grade does not automatically increase power, fuel economy, or engine cleanliness when the engine does not need the extra knock resistance.

Flex-fuel or alternative-fuel vehicle
Vehicles specifically labeled for fuels such as E85

Fuel composition is a separate question from octane grade. Do not use E85 merely because its pump octane number is high unless the vehicle is designed for it.

The octane number is about knock resistance, not a quality ranking

At most U.S. gas stations, common grades are labeled with an Anti-Knock Index such as 87, 89, 91, or 93. A higher number means the fuel has greater resistance to auto-ignition under pressure and heat. It does not mean the fuel contains more energy or is universally cleaner.

Turbocharged, supercharged, and higher-compression engines are more likely to call for higher octane, but engine design and calibration—not the presence of a turbo alone—determine the correct fuel. Some modern engines can adapt to more than one grade, which is why the required-versus-recommended wording is important.

If you bought a used vehicle and do not have the paper manual, check the fuel-door label and obtain the owner's manual for the exact model year and powertrain. Do not copy the fuel choice from a visually similar trim because different engines in the same model line can have different requirements.

Before choosing the cheaper or more expensive pump button, verify these four things

  • The exact model year, engine, and powertrain in your vehicle
  • The minimum octane number printed on the fuel door or in the owner's manual
  • Whether the manual uses the word required, recommended, or a similar conditional statement
  • Any special guidance for towing, heavy loads, extreme heat, or high-altitude operation
  • Whether the vehicle is approved for ethanol blends beyond normal pump gasoline
  • Whether a previous owner added an aftermarket tune that changes fuel requirements

If you accidentally used a lower octane than required

    Do not panic or start adding random fuel additives

    One mistaken fill does not have the same consequence in every vehicle. Avoid unverified octane boosters and use the manufacturer's guidance for your engine.

    Drive gently if the engine is operating normally

    Avoid hard acceleration, heavy towing, or sustained high load until you can confirm the correct next step for your vehicle.

    Listen for abnormal combustion noise and watch warning lights

    Persistent pinging or knocking, a flashing check-engine light, strong hesitation, or other abnormal behavior deserves prompt attention rather than continued heavy driving.

    Refuel with the correct grade as directed

    When practical, return to the required fuel grade and follow any vehicle-specific instructions in the owner's manual or from the manufacturer.

Safety check

An aftermarket tune can change the answer

Performance software or hardware modifications may require a different octane than the factory owner's manual. If the vehicle is tuned and you do not know the calibration, confirm the required fuel with the tuner or return the vehicle to a known factory calibration before guessing.
