Use the run-flat feature to leave danger, not to ignore the warning

    Reduce speed and stabilize the car

    Avoid abrupt steering, hard acceleration, and hard braking. A tire with little or no pressure can change steering response and generate heat even if its reinforced sidewall still supports the vehicle.

    Confirm that the tire is actually a run-flat design

    Do not assume a vehicle with no spare automatically has run-flat tires. Check the tire sidewall designation, tire documentation, or vehicle information before relying on extended mobility.

    Find the exact speed and distance limit

    Use the tire maker and vehicle instructions. Some products use a familiar 50-mile and 50-mph reference, while others specify a different limit or conditions that reduce the available distance.

    Drive only as far as needed for a safe inspection

    Choose the nearest practical tire service location rather than the original destination. If the tire is visibly damaged, handling is unstable, the wheel may be contacting the road, or the vehicle instructions say to stop, arrange roadside assistance instead.

Conditions that can use up the tire's remaining mobility faster

  • A cut, impact break, sidewall tear, or damage larger than a simple tread puncture
  • Heavy vehicle loading, towing, or a full passenger-and-cargo load
  • High ambient temperature or a long period of driving before the warning was noticed
  • Sustained speed near the tire's reduced-pressure limit
  • Repeated hard cornering, braking, or rough-road impacts
  • More than one tire losing pressure
  • A TPMS warning that was ignored long enough for the tire to become very hot or visibly damaged

Why a run-flat tire can look normal enough to fool you

Reinforced sidewalls are designed to carry the vehicle for a limited period after pressure loss. That support can make the tire look less obviously flat than a conventional tire, which is one reason tire-pressure monitoring is especially important on vehicles equipped with run-flats.

The same reinforcement does not make the tire immune to internal damage. Heat and flexing during low- or zero-pressure operation can affect the structure in ways that are not visible from the outside. Repairability therefore depends on the tire maker's rules, the location and size of the original damage, how far the tire was driven, the pressure loss, and operating conditions.

After the event, tell the tire shop that the tire was driven with low or zero pressure and approximately how far and how fast. That history matters when deciding whether an internal inspection, repair, or replacement is appropriate.

Stop and get help

A run-flat tire is not a normal tire once pressure is lost

If the vehicle becomes difficult to control, the tire is visibly damaged, the wheel is exposed, you smell overheated rubber, or the manufacturer's allowed distance or speed has been reached, stop in a safe location and arrange assistance. Do not keep driving simply because the sidewall is still holding the vehicle up.
