    Keep your eyes on the open path ahead

    Do not stare at the guardrail, puddle, or vehicle beside you. Looking toward the safe path helps you avoid an unnecessary steering correction when grip returns.

    Ease off the accelerator

    Reduce power smoothly instead of lifting and braking as hard as possible. The goal is to let vehicle speed fall without creating a sudden weight or traction change.

    Hold the wheel steady

    If the car drifts slightly, avoid a large steering angle. Tires can regain grip abruptly, and a heavily turned wheel can create a sharp change of direction when they do.

    Brake only as the situation requires, with controlled input

    Avoid a panic brake application during the brief loss of grip. If braking becomes necessary and the vehicle has ABS, apply firm controlled pressure and let the system work rather than pumping the pedal.

    Slow farther after grip returns

    One hydroplaning event is evidence that the current speed and water conditions are a poor combination. Increase following distance and reduce speed before the next area of standing water.

Hydroplaning is about water, tire contact, and speed—not just whether the road looks flooded

A tire normally pushes water away through its tread so the rubber can stay in contact with the pavement. When water cannot escape quickly enough, the tire can ride partly on the water layer and lose much of its steering and braking grip.

Standing water increases the risk, but a road does not need to look like a flooded street. Highway ruts, low spots, bridge approaches, worn pavement, and lanes with poor drainage can hold enough water to create a sudden change in grip.

Speed is one of the few factors the driver can immediately change. Tires with adequate tread and correct pressure still cannot make every puddle safe at highway speed, so reducing speed in heavy rain is part of the prevention strategy rather than a reaction after the first slide.

After the scare, check the factors that can make the next one more likely

  • Measure cold tire pressure against the driver's-door placard instead of using the maximum pressure molded into the tire sidewall.
  • Inspect tread depth and look for uneven wear across each tire, not just one spot on the outer shoulder.
  • Check for cuts, bulges, punctures, or a tire that has been repeatedly losing pressure.
  • Notice whether one lane had deep wheel-track ruts or standing water that you can avoid safely next time.
  • Make sure the windshield, wipers, washer system, headlights, and defogging system are good enough to see water before you reach it.
  • Reconsider cruise-control use in heavy rain when road speed may need frequent smooth adjustments.

Impact damage can happen during the same storm. A new vibration, pressure loss, or sidewall bulge should be checked before returning to highway speed.

Stop and get help

If rain is overwhelming the tires or your visibility, the safest speed may be off the highway

When you cannot see lane markings, water is repeatedly pulling the car out of its path, or traffic conditions make a safe following distance impossible, exit or stop at a safe location away from moving traffic if conditions allow. Do not stop in a live lane or under an overpass, and do not drive through flooded sections to reach a preferred stopping point.
