The glass can be installed correctly while the camera still needs a second step
Forward-facing cameras are commonly mounted high on the windshield behind the rearview mirror. Depending on the vehicle, that camera may support lane-departure warning, lane centering, automatic high beams, traffic-sign recognition, collision warning, or automatic emergency braking. The camera does not simply need a clear view. It also needs to know precisely where the road is relative to the vehicle.
Replacing the windshield can change the camera’s mounting relationship by a small amount. Some manufacturers therefore call for recalibration after windshield replacement. The exact procedure is not universal: one vehicle may require a stationary target setup, another may require a controlled drive at specified speeds and road conditions, and some may require both.
That is why a generic promise that every camera will automatically relearn on its own is not enough. The correct answer comes from the service information for the exact year, make, model, trim, and driver-assistance equipment on the vehicle.
Ask these questions before you leave the glass shop
- Does this exact vehicle require ADAS or forward-camera calibration after windshield replacement?
- Was the replacement glass the correct specification for the vehicle’s camera, sensors, heater elements, acoustic layers, and other equipped features?
- Was calibration completed in-house, by a dealer, or by another qualified service provider?
- Was the procedure static, dynamic, or both, and did the system report a successful completion?
- Are there any diagnostic trouble codes or driver-assistance warning messages remaining?
- Did the shop verify camera visibility through the glass and reinstall trim, brackets, and sensor covers correctly?
- Is there documentation showing the calibration result in case a warning appears later?
What to do during the first drive after replacement
- 01Start with the instrument cluster
Before moving, look for camera, lane-assist, collision-system, or other driver-assistance warnings. A warning that stays on is a reason to review the repair before assuming the feature is available.
- 02Keep the camera area clean and unobstructed
Remove tape, stickers, haze, snow, ice, or residue from the portion of glass the camera looks through. Do not place a dashcam mount, toll tag, or accessory in the camera’s field of view unless the vehicle instructions allow it.
- 03Use normal driving as a check, not as a calibration guess
If the manufacturer specifies a dynamic calibration, follow the required road, speed, lane-marking, weather, and traffic conditions. Do not invent a route or assume a short neighborhood drive completes the procedure.
- 04Treat odd behavior as a service issue
Unexpected lane warnings, unavailable-system messages, or driver-assist behavior that changed after the glass repair should be checked against the calibration and repair procedure rather than ignored.

Driver-assistance features are not a substitute for a properly calibrated system
Until the required calibration is confirmed complete, drive as though the affected assistance features are unavailable. Keep full control of steering, braking, speed, and following distance, and follow the vehicle manufacturer’s repair instructions rather than relying on a dashboard icon alone.
