Before the emergency, learn where the little funnel is stored
The easiest time to find a capless-filler adapter is in your driveway, not on a dark shoulder with an empty tank.
- Confirm whether your vehicle uses a capless fuel filler
- Read the owner's-manual section for filling from a portable fuel container
- Locate the factory funnel or adapter and confirm it has not been removed by a previous owner
- Store the adapter in the specified location so it stays clean and easy to find
- Use an approved portable fuel container designed for gasoline
- Know the correct fuel grade and ethanol limits for the vehicle
- Keep roadside-assistance information available if refueling where the vehicle stopped would be unsafe
If you actually run out of fuel, use the capless system the way the vehicle maker designed it
- 01Make the location safe before handling gasoline
Move the vehicle out of traffic if it can be done safely, switch off the engine and ignition, keep flames and smoking materials away, and do not stand in an exposed traffic lane to solve the fuel problem.
- 02Use the specified funnel or adapter
Retrieve the vehicle's capless-filler funnel and insert it as the owner's manual directs. Ford and GM examples use a dedicated adapter for fuel from a portable container because an ordinary gas-can spout may not open the internal filler mechanism correctly.
- 03Pour slowly from an approved container
Control the container so fuel does not splash back or overflow. Do not wedge the internal doors open with a tool or force a makeshift nozzle through the filler neck.
- 04Remove the adapter and close the fuel door
After enough fuel has been added, remove the funnel, wipe or clean it according to the vehicle instructions, and return it to its storage location. Check for spilled fuel before attempting to start the vehicle.
- 05If the vehicle still will not start, stop adding fuel blindly
Some vehicles may require a specific restart procedure after running dry, and repeated cranking can create other problems. Follow the owner's manual or use roadside assistance if the restart instructions are unclear.
Why a normal gas-can spout may not work in a capless filler
A capless filler uses internal spring-loaded sealing doors instead of a traditional screw-on gas cap. A retail fuel-pump nozzle is sized to open the system as intended, but a portable container's smaller spout may not engage the mechanism the same way.
The factory funnel is not just a convenience for avoiding spills. On vehicles that specify one, it acts as the correct interface between the portable container and the capless filler. Forcing another object into the opening can damage the seals, leave debris in the filler, or create a spill that turns a simple out-of-fuel event into a repair.
Used-car owners should check for the adapter soon after purchase. It is easy for a small plastic funnel to disappear when cargo organizers, tire tools, or emergency equipment are removed from the vehicle.
Stop and get help
Do not refuel in an unsafe traffic position or inside an enclosed space
Gasoline vapor is flammable. If the vehicle is stopped where you cannot refuel without standing in live traffic, get to a protected location and use roadside or emergency assistance instead. Use only an approved fuel container, keep ignition sources away, and follow the vehicle and container instructions. Never fill a portable gasoline container while it is sitting inside the passenger compartment, cargo area, or pickup bed.
