Stop and get help

Before you try to move, make sure the car is safe to sit in

If the vehicle is stopped in or near an active travel lane, visibility is poor, floodwater or ice is present, the vehicle is on an unstable slope, or you smell fuel or see damage, prioritize getting people to a safe location and contact emergency or roadside assistance. If you remain in a snowbound vehicle with the engine running, keep the tailpipe area clear of snow and avoid assuming that an exhaust outlet will stay clear as wind or a plow adds more snow around the rear of the car.

Use a low-force recovery sequence instead of repeated wheelspin

The goal is to reduce the resistance around the car and give the driven tires something they can grip. A few careful minutes usually help more than repeated full-throttle attempts.

    Stop and look at why the car is stuck

    Check whether the tires are sitting in polished ruts, the bumper or underbody is pushing into a snowbank, or the car is resting on packed snow under the center. If the vehicle is high-centered, extra tire grip alone may not free it.

    Clear the exhaust and the path around the driven wheels

    Remove loose snow from the tailpipe area, then shovel a short ramp in front of and behind the tires that actually deliver power. Clear enough snow under the rocker panels and bumper so the body is not acting like a plow.

    Straighten the front wheels as much as the space allows

    A sharply turned tire has to push sideways through snow as well as forward. Starting with a straighter wheel angle can reduce resistance while you build the first few feet of momentum.

    Add traction without putting people near a spinning tire

    Place a purpose-made traction board, approved traction material, or another safe high-friction surface where the driven tire can climb onto it. Keep hands, feet, loose clothing, shovels, and bystanders away before applying power.

    Use gentle throttle and stop if the tires begin to spin fast

    Apply just enough power to let the tires bite. If the tire speed rises while the car barely moves, release the accelerator, reset the traction aid, and try again rather than polishing the snow into ice.

Traction control, snow mode, AWD, and 4WD do not all behave the same

Modern traction-control systems may reduce engine power or brake a spinning wheel to help the tire with more grip. That behavior can be useful when you are trying to move on a slick surface, so turning every stability system off by habit is not a good default. Some vehicles provide a temporary traction-control reduction mode for deep snow, sand, or rocking the vehicle, but the exact logic is model-specific.

Snow mode can soften throttle response or change transmission and AWD behavior, while part-time 4WD trucks may provide 4H or 4L for specific low-traction conditions. These controls are not interchangeable. Use the mode described for your vehicle and surface in the owner’s manual, and do not shift a transfer case into a mode that is not intended for the current speed or surface.

If your vehicle has very low ground clearance, AWD can still leave it stranded once packed snow supports the underbody and unloads the tires. At that point, digging or professional recovery matters more than sending more torque to the wheels.

A small winter recovery kit is easier to use when it matches the car

  • Compact snow shovel that fits the trunk or cargo area
  • Gloves and weatherproof outer layer that can be reached without unloading luggage
  • Purpose-made traction aid sized for the tires and storage space
  • Flashlight or headlamp with checked batteries
  • Ice scraper and snow brush
  • Phone charging cable or power bank
  • Roadside-assistance information stored offline
  • Tow-eye location and installation instructions if the vehicle uses a removable factory tow eye

Safety check

Do not improvise a recovery pull from suspension or body parts

Recovery forces can be much higher than ordinary towing forces. Use only the attachment points and procedures identified by the vehicle manufacturer, and use equipment rated for the job. If the car is deeply buried, high-centered, at an unsafe angle, or requires a kinetic pull or winch, professional recovery is usually the safer choice.
