Passenger-type and LT tires solve different load and use cases
These tires can provide the ride, rolling resistance, wet-road behavior, and load capacity the vehicle was designed around. Do not assume 'passenger' means unsuitable for a pickup simply because the body is a truck.
LT construction and load ranges come with different load-and-pressure relationships. The correct pressure is vehicle- and tire-specific, not automatically the maximum pressure molded on the sidewall.
XL or reinforced markings are not the same classification as an LT tire. Match the complete tire specification instead of treating all higher-load markings as interchangeable.
Before changing tire service type, write down the vehicle requirements
- Original tire size and recommended cold inflation pressure from the driver-door placard.
- Vehicle GVWR, front and rear GAWR, and the occupant-and-cargo capacity statement on the certification/tire labels.
- Original service type and any alternate sizes specifically approved by the vehicle manufacturer.
- Replacement tire load index or load capacity and speed rating required for the vehicle and intended use.
- Wheel width, diameter, load rating, offset, and clearance with brakes, suspension, fenders, and steering at full lock.
- TPMS compatibility and whether changing wheel/tire dimensions affects calibration or driver-assistance systems.
- Towing or payload plans, including tongue weight and cargo that also count against the vehicle's rated capacity.
Use the placard as the starting point, then validate every change

Read the door labels and owner's manual before shopping. The truck's appearance, trim name, hitch receiver, or four-wheel-drive badge does not establish the tire specification by itself.
- 02Compare complete tire specifications
Size, service type, load index or load range, speed rating, and maximum load are separate pieces of information. A tire that fits the wheel diameter can still be wrong for the vehicle.
- 03Have pressure requirements calculated for any service-type change
Do not copy the old placard PSI onto an LT conversion or inflate to the new tire's sidewall maximum by default. Ask a qualified tire professional or the vehicle/tire manufacturer to confirm the load-based pressure for the exact approved setup.
- 04Recheck real loaded use
If you tow or haul, use actual scale weights when practical and stay below vehicle, axle, wheel, and tire limits. A higher-capacity tire cannot legally or mechanically raise the truck's certified GVWR or GAWR.

Load Range E is not a universal 'better truck tire' setting
Load-range letters describe a tire's construction and load/pressure capability; they do not automatically mean better braking, comfort, snow traction, fuel economy, or suitability for every half-ton pickup. A heavier or higher-pressure tire can change ride and handling, and an incorrect replacement can create a load-capacity problem even if it looks tougher. Match the vehicle's requirements first.
The best replacement is the one that preserves the vehicle's rated system
NHTSA tire guidance points drivers back to the vehicle placard and owner's manual for recommended tire size, pressure, and load information. That approach matters on modern pickups and SUVs because the tire works as part of a system that includes the wheel, TPMS, steering, suspension, brakes, payload ratings, and electronic controls.
If your goal is towing, gravel-road durability, snow performance, or off-road puncture resistance, describe that use to the tire professional after you establish the non-negotiable load and fitment requirements. Then compare tread design and construction within the approved range instead of starting with the most aggressive-looking sidewall in the store.
