Before comparing UTQG numbers, make sure both tires are valid choices for the vehicle

A grading label cannot correct the wrong fitment. Eliminate incompatible tires before you compare the grades.

  • The tire size matches the vehicle placard or an approved alternate fitment
  • Load index and load capacity meet the vehicle requirement
  • Speed rating is appropriate for the vehicle and intended use
  • The tire type fits the season and climate, including winter requirements when applicable
  • The wheel width and vehicle clearances support the exact tire size
  • The vehicle maker does not require an OE-specific construction, run-flat design, or other special specification

Read the three UTQG grades as different tests, not one combined score

Treadwear grade
Relative wear comparison within the UTQG system

A larger number indicates a higher relative treadwear grade under the standardized test, but real mileage still depends on driving, alignment, pressure, rotation, road surface, climate, and tire design. It is not a mileage warranty.

Traction grade
Comparing standardized wet straight-line braking performance

UTQG traction does not summarize cornering, hydroplaning resistance, snow grip, ice grip, or every wet-road behavior. Treat it as one wet-braking data point rather than a complete safety ranking.

Temperature grade
Comparing resistance to heat generation under the specified test

The grade does not excuse underinflation, overload, excessive speed, or a tire that is otherwise wrong for the vehicle. Heat control still depends heavily on correct pressure and load.

Use UTQG as the fourth or fifth filter in a real tire-shopping decision

    Start with the driver-door placard and owner information

    Record the original size, cold inflation pressure, and any load or speed requirements before opening a retailer comparison page.

    Narrow by use case

    Decide whether you need an all-season, all-weather, dedicated winter, performance, touring, or other category based on climate and driving. UTQG cannot tell you whether a tire is the right seasonal type.

    Compare UTQG only among suitable candidates

    At this stage the grades can help explain tradeoffs. A long-wearing touring tire and a higher-grip performance tire may be designed for different priorities, so the larger treadwear number is not automatically the better purchase.

    Check warranty terms and independent performance data separately

    Mileage warranties, road-hazard coverage, snow certification, noise, ride quality, and wet or winter tests answer different questions than UTQG. Keep those sources separate rather than treating one sidewall code as the whole comparison.

Good to know

A high treadwear grade is useful only if the tire still matches the job

If you routinely drive in snow, tow or carry heavy loads, use a staggered performance setup, or have a vehicle with specific OE tire requirements, those constraints come before the UTQG number. Buy the correct tire category and fitment first, then use the grade as one comparison tool.
