Recover first, diagnose second
The middle of a sway event is not the time to experiment with steering, throttle, or brake-controller settings. Make the combination stable, then stop and find the reason.
- 01Hold a steady lane position
Look well ahead and keep steering inputs small. Chasing the trailer from side to side with fast corrections can add another oscillation to the one already happening behind you.
- 02Reduce speed progressively
Ease off the accelerator and let the combination slow in a controlled way. A gust, downhill section, or passing semi can trigger movement that becomes much more serious at higher speed.
- 03Use trailer-brake controls only as your vehicle instructions describe
Some tow-vehicle manuals tell drivers with electric trailer brakes and a compatible controller to apply the trailer brakes manually during sway. Other setups differ. Know the procedure before the trip rather than learning it during an emergency.
- 04Pull over after the sway stops
Do not treat a recovered sway event as proof that the rig is fine. Exit traffic when it is safe and inspect the trailer before returning to normal highway speed.
Check the things that can turn one gust into repeated sway
- Confirm the coupler is fully latched and the hitch hardware, pin, safety chains, electrical connector, and breakaway cable are secure
- Look for cargo that shifted toward the rear or to one side of the trailer
- Confirm tongue weight and overall loading remain within the trailer and tow-vehicle requirements
- Check trailer tire pressure when the tires are cold and inspect for damage, unusual bulges, or a visibly low tire
- Make sure heavy gear is secured low and cannot move during braking or lane changes
- Inspect weight-distribution or sway-control equipment for loose, bent, or incorrectly connected parts if your setup uses it
- Consider whether speed, crosswind, road grooves, or a passing truck triggered the event and reduce speed accordingly
Why a trailer can feel stable for miles and then suddenly start moving
A trailer is sensitive to both setup and conditions. A rig that feels calm on a still morning can react differently when a crosswind arrives, when a large truck passes, when speed increases, or when cargo shifts after repeated bumps. That is why a single stable test drive does not replace correct loading and hitch setup.
Rear-heavy loading is especially important to investigate because it can reduce the stabilizing force at the hitch. The correct tongue-weight range and load placement depend on the trailer, hitch, and tow vehicle, so use their ratings rather than a generic rule from another rig.
Electronic trailer-sway control can help on equipped vehicles, but it does not increase payload, tow rating, hitch capacity, tire capacity, or the trailer's own loading limits. Treat the feature as assistance, not permission to tow a poorly loaded or mechanically questionable trailer.

Do not continue at highway speed if the cause is still unknown
Repeated sway, a damaged tire, loose hitch hardware, shifting cargo, brake faults, or a trailer that cannot be loaded within its ratings are reasons to stop towing until the problem is corrected. If the combination cannot be made stable, arrange professional help rather than trying to drive through it.
