Trailer Breakaway Pin Pulled by Accident? Stop Before You Tow Again

Handle the event as a brake activation until you prove otherwise

   Stop and secure the trailer

   Park out of traffic, set the tow vehicle brake, and chock the trailer as appropriate before working around the hitch. Do not crawl between an unsecured tow vehicle and trailer.

   Find out why the cable pulled

   Look for a cable looped around the wrong point, too little slack for turns, a cable snagged on the coupler, or an actual hitch-separation problem. Correct the cause before simply pushing the pin back in.

   Inspect the switch, pin, cable, and wiring

   Make sure the switch body is secure, the correct pin is intact, the cable is not frayed, and wires are not pulled, pinched, melted, or shorted. Replace damaged parts rather than improvising a substitute pin.

   Restore the system according to its instructions

   With the trailer secured, reinstall the proper pin and verify that the brakes release normally. Follow the breakaway-system maker's procedure for testing battery state and operation before towing.

Before moving again, confirm the emergency system is ready for the next event

• The breakaway switch is firmly mounted and the correct pin is fully seated
• The cable is attached to the tow vehicle at the approved independent point and is not wrapped around the safety chains
• Cable slack allows full steering without dragging on the road or snagging the coupler
• The breakaway battery or approved power source tests charged according to the system instructions
• The trailer brakes release when the pin is installed and apply during the documented breakaway-system test
• The 7-way connector, brake-controller wiring, safety chains, coupler, and hitch show no damage from the event
